Tierra Sur Restaurant Description:
The gleaming Herzog winery houses a small marketplace as well as this modern kosher restaurant with fanciful dishes that avoid dairy of any kind. The execution doesn't always live up to the promise of the menu descriptions, but the fare is basically solid. Chef Todd Aarons has worked at the Zuni Café in San Francisco and The Savoy in New York, but his staff is from Oxnard---not exactly a fine-dining mecca. His menu is mainly Mediterranean and the dishes are meant to pair well with the kosher wines on offer here. A three-course wine-tasting menu usually costs around $40 for lunch and $60 for dinner. Organic free-range chicken is spiced with marjoram and paired with vegetables. Duck is served two ways (seared breast and confit of the leg) with corn cakes and gooseberry sauce. Lamb chops come with a Moroccan stew and chickpea fries. Desserts won't rock your world, so perhaps it's best to stick with coffee or an aperitif. In addition to Herzog wines (available in two-ounce and larger pours), beer, ale, Cognac and brandy---all kosher---are offered.
