Medora's Mecca Description:
Reliable Italian fare is the hallmark of many a South Philly gravy joint, but Medora's manages to stand out from the crowd. It's not the décor that does it---the setting is plain and simple, with the lights a bit on the bright side---it's the food and the mood. Medora's is a down-home eatery, the kind of place where the waitress knows better than you---and she's right. Not too many places serve tripe and spaghetti anymore, but Medora's does as well as a Caesar salad that is fresh and tangy. The pasta is al dente and the ravioli homemade, doused in red sauce that is blessedly straightforward, without a hint of sweetness. The menu has probably stayed the same since the place opened nearly four decades ago. You've got your veal and chicken Parm, your Marsala, your spaghetti with mussels and clams. But it would be a real shame to miss the homemade meatballs, served like true Italian beauties---generously formed and a little bit spicy. Try the tiramisu for dessert.
