Kabul Description:
Not Indian but not Arabic---that's one way to describe the flavorful food of Afghanistan. This neat and simple storefront in Old City is the only one of its kind in Philadelphia. Apparently, the charm of the food comes from its long marinating in various herbs, resulting in extremely flavorful versions of kebabs and stews. Specials include pumpkin with meat sauce, and kebabs of beef and chickpeas with cilantro sauce. There are dishes of brown or saffron rice, and a steamed dumpling (ashak) filled with scallions and served with homemade yogurt. Desserts are a fried pastry, similar to a funnel cake, or firnee, a kind of pudding.
