The Plough & the Stars Description:
More an upscale Irish restaurant than an Irish pub, this is one of the busiest scenes in Old City. The guys belly up to the Guinness on draft at the bar, and in front of the fireplace is the spot for conversation, if you make yourself heard above the din. This is part of the old Corn Exchange bank building, so it retains the bank's wonderfully vast ceilings and rococo carvings, hence the noise. The sage green walls are hung with paintings by Galway artists, or are decorated with Gaelic clay sculptures, and owners, Marion Ryder, Jerome Donovan and Austin McGrath will make you feel Irish even if you're not. Either in the mezzanine level restaurant or in the bar area (smoky), you can enjoy Irish smoked salmon with home-baked wheaten bread, or mussels cooked in cream and herbs, or a coarse-textured duck terrine. As in most of the better restaurants in Ireland, they have a French chef, Vincent Sanari, who weds technique with the Irish appreciation of fresh vegetables and local products. Whether it's duck breast with a caramelized pear sauce or a baby rack of lamb, it's fine. Round off with champ, a traditional mix of mashed potatoes and scallions, or a rasher of imported Irish bacon. The chocolate truffle cake or apple tart is good for dessert but the Irish coffee is even better.
