Lolita Restaurant Description:
On one corner is El Vez, Stephen Starr's paean to kitschy Mexican food; on the other, the delights of Capogiro gelato. But across the street is this unassuming restaurant that revises all your ideas about Mexican cuisine. Partners Valerie Safran and chef Marcie Turney are seriously driving changes on 13th street. Lolita brashly serves Mexican fare with the touch of a contemporary American kitchen, using fresh, local ingredients. Bring your own tequila, and they will provide freshly-squeezed juices (even watermelon), then dig into the guacamole, tamal with huitlacoche, and salmon cured in tequila and lime. Friendly to vegetarians, the kitchen can substitute three chile tofu or grilled portobello for any meat or seafood item. For dessert, try the coconut tres leches with a side of dark chocolate pot de crème. Service is consistently professional.
