A favorite of generations of Washingtonians, more for its location than its cooking, the Old Angler's Inn sits just across the road from the C&O Canal. In summer, the deck is about as picturesque as any outdoor dining spot in the Washington metro area. In winter, the ambience is made even cozier by the roaring fire in the downstairs sitting room, where you can have a pre- or post-dinner drink. Ingredients are good, preparations are simple and cooking times are near-perfect. Roast fish and meats are well executed. You might also consider ordering a tasting menu for the entire table. It might start with a Maine lobster tail with Thai curry sauce, continue with a silken pumpkin soup, followed by peppercorn-crusted tuna and rack of lamb and a hazelnut-chocolate cake for dessert.

Perhaps lunch menu is a different affair, my husband and I went for Sunday lunch, the menu was standard, the chef was infelxible on the basics (i'm pregnant so asked for brie on a sandwich to be changed for chedder etc.) I was informed this was not possible? The muscles were not fresh, the waiter was borderline tolerant of my requests. We went for an outdoor lunch, unfortunately it rained and we were moved inside where it was dingy, such poor lighting - may be romantic for an evening but was difficult in the day. The transformation from outdoor to inside was slow despite a small amount of customers. The food was dissapointing, below average and expensive. We wouldn't return, despite good reviews on the evening meals, I can't see that the attitudes, food, and ambiance can change enough to entice us back.
Altogether a dissapointing time with overpriced, unappetising food.

What a disappointment as this restaurant is well reviewed, however perhaps it was just Sunday brunch - but I think not. The outside area is cute, the menu set expensive, about $32 for brunch. It rained so we had to move inside, where it was so dark we couldn't exchange cards on our anniversary. My husband�s salad was sub-standard (I've had better in pubs), the prawns in his salad were glassy. Our water glasses stayed empty for some time before being filled, the menu was plain, the waiter was indifferent, and the price was high. They did remove the charge for the glass of wine as I didn't eat my starter, which was fair. We will never return, the roaring fire place in the winter isn't enough for us to throw good money away.
