Dot's Back Inn Description:
You've got to love a place with a menu that quotes Virginia Woolf and Wimpy. That's Dots Back for you. And while that menu entices (like the WW II pin-up girls on the walls) with its robust burgers, addictive nachos and square meals (including chicken Smithfield), it's the specials scrawled on the dry erase board over the bar (which generously pours happy hour, er, make that good neighbor hour, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays) that totally seduce with grilled swordfish with lemon hollandaise, perhaps, and vegetables such as braised fennel and ratatouille. One night's fat fried oysters numbered too many to count. The chef gruffly yelling at the waitress, amidst the cacophony of customer conversations, when orders are up makes better drama than anything on the TVs. Lines may form on weekends, and even weeknights, for one of the wooden booths or tables, even the bar, at this locals' hangout and homage to a waitress named Dot who dreamt of her own restaurant back in the 1940s; hence all the vintage photos. The one of FDR might make you think New Deal, while the reasonable prices here for amply good food, make you think fair deal.
