River Room Description:
This St. Paul institution goes back through many storied retail names. It started in the late 1940s as Schueneman's, which was bought out by the Dayton family's department store in the late 1950s. By 1963 the River Room had relocated across the street, where it welcomed several generations of downtown shoppers and office workers. The store was renamed Marshall Field's in 2002, and four years later it became Macy's. Despite all that change, the River Room has remained the same, a comfort for those who enjoy classic department store fare---meatloaf, a lively Asian-accented chicken salad, a textbook wild rice soup, popovers---served in a crystal chandelier-lit setting. The restaurant also is a smart pre-Ordway and -Xcel Energy Center destination (in part because guests can park free in the store's parking ramp).
