Sakura Restaurant & Sushi Bar Description:
A casual, yet stylish, Japanese restaurant in downtown St. Paul, specializing in sushi and izakaya (Japanese bar snacks).
Although the sushi is far from the best in town (the presentation in particular could stand improvement), the fish at Sakura is generally quite fresh. The number nine roll, which doesn't appear on the menu, is a favorite, served inside-out with tempura-battered shrimp at its center and unagi (fresh water eel) sauce drizzled on the outside. Avoid the teriyaki and the sukiyaki, both of which are cloyingly sweet. But grilled fish, such as the kama hamachi (yellowtail tuna collar), is crisp and flaky. The vegetable bento box, which contains a salad topped with gome-ae (soy and sesame) sauce and a little pillow of toasted tofu, will please vegetarians. It's one of those rare meatless dishes that doesn't feel like an afterthought.
