Surrounded by Live Oaks, ponds and waterfalls. Seafood, pasta, beef and chicken in a very relaxed atmosphere.
In its youth, Crumpets helped make San Antonio safe for cuisine that pushed the boundaries of our culinary ken. Green peppercorns, it is safe to say, made their first appearance here. But the conservative crowd that now dominates the clientele has aged along with the menu, and diners currently seem content with the likes of baked Brie with toasted almonds, stuffed mushrooms, and house-made pâté as starters; pastas of the primavera and Sunny Fettuccine with sun-dried tomatoes and pine nuts sort prevail; and entrées tend towards chicken six ways (still including green peppercorn and Cognac), two kinds of veal medallions and seafood and steak either solo or in combination. Yet, there are occasional flashes of the old spirit in seasonal specials such as wild Alaskan salmon, and the setting continues to be one of the most seductive in town. The attached bakery also continues to beguile with bounty such as pecan brownies, croissants, the matchless Crumpets Delight cake and a panoply of lapidary tarts. If the lush chocolate cake is frequently served too cold, perhaps the answer is to order it at the beginning of the meal---assuming that "life's short, eat dessert first" is a personal credo.
