Vineyards Restaurant Description:
It's worth the 30-minute drive from downtown San Antonio to The Vineyards, if only for the bucolic setting which includes a small but functioning vineyard. The owners are wine connoisseurs in their own right, and the list reflects their passion. Though the menu has never quite lived up to the wine and the atmosphere, some dishes bear a thoughtful food focus. Among the starters are roasted tomato basil soup and the Mini Beef Wellington, a creation of tenderloin medallions layered between puff pastry with mushroom duxelles and topped with hollandaise sauce. Entrée include a rack of lamb with a balsamic-shallot reduction served over mushroom risotto; seafood specials such as seared ahi with a wasabi mayonnaise have also begun to crop up alongside the time-tested grilled chicken marinated in chipotle-infused garlic oil. Variations on a chocolate theme seduce at dessert, with a molten chocolate cake served with a Chambord raspberry sauce among the selections. To carry its seductive potential to even greater ends, consider having the cake with someone special at a candlelit table set up in the vineyard. Whatever the question, yes should be the answer.

There are so many restaurants in San Antonio, and we've been to a lot of them. Our hands-down favorite, though, is The Vineyards, and we've been going there for more than ten years. The food is delicious, seasoned and cooked perfectly. Best things I've tried are the Sea Bass with an awesome seafood (crab & shrimp?) cream sauce and aromatic rice, and the pork tenderloin with cheese grits. The filet with mushrooms and garlic-mashed is my go-to dinner when I can't choose. Our server last time was Alan, and he was so professional and friendly. Plus, he had wonderful wine recommendations (and unlike a lot of places, they WEREN'T the most expensive things on the menu!!). We love this place and go there at least once a month. It's such a pretty drive and not surrounded by a million restaurants. This last time we did the private table in the vineyard, and it was really romantic and beautiful. It's always busy on the weekends, though, so you have to make reservations; I guess that's the only flaw.

I am very upset. I had penned a letter concerning our awful dining experience to this restaurant. It was returned to me with my label torn off and repositioned on a brown envelope. It doesn't surprise me. Our wine cooler came after the bottle was half finished. Our Caesar Salads were wilted and brown. My husband only got his cracked pepper when his salad was half eaten. I didn't get a sharp knife for my rack of lamb and when it did come, my meat was cold. My mushroom risotto was so salty I couldn't eat it. I asked for cheese with my port and got a plate of grated cheese and my coffee came in a mug with the spoon still in it.
