Tangata Description:
Though Joachim Splichal's restaurants are generally dinner destinations, this outpost in the courtyard of the Bowers Museum represents a most welcome foray into daytime dining. The patio lends a Spanish air with views of white stucco walls, red brick roofs and hanging purple bougainvillea. Inside, the modern space is cheerful and bright with its floating brass artwork and glass ceilings. Chef Gregg Wiele has strayed a bit from his Spanish theme and now cooks seasonal Euro-Cal dishes with flavorful flair. To start, order up a refreshing iced tea or glass of wine with the soup du jour, Dungeness crab cakes or traditional Italian heirloom tomato salad. The fire-grilled flank steak is a good choice for mains as is the fish of the day, but the wild mushroom ravioli is a standout. While the wine list is very short, the by-the-glass selections are rather good and mostly from California and Oregon. And in true Patina Group style, the house-made ice creams and sorbets at meal's end are well worth the wait.
