If you are into college bars and fraternity-sorority crowds, this is the place to go. If you've been to Malibu, Santa Monica or Balboa Island, you'll recognize the scene: a fun and festive, kick-back-and-unwind kind of place, with an energetic, attractive waitstaff, great water views and an extensive menu consisting of casual, satisfying seafood and other fare. What distinguishes Crab Shell from the other beer guzzling crab shacks is the better than average quality of some of its offerings. The sautéed crab cakes with pesto and red pepper sauce (available in appetizer and entrée portions) are a welcome and inventive alternative to the fried-with-mayonnaise standard, or go for the lobster roll with drawn butter, a straightforward preparation revealing the naturally sweet, delicate flavor of the lobster.
