Loon River Café Description:
Despite its location in a glossy conference and banquet center, this affordable, Michigan-themed restaurant has a pretty convincing northern lodge vibe with a big faux-stone fireplace, field-and-stream trappings, wooden floors and country furnishings. Executive chef Ray Hollingsworth has cooked here for about two decades. His menu includes rainbow trout that dart around a tank (they are plucked when someone orders the hunter's-style dish). Other old-fashioned Midwestern selections include whitefish baked with bacon, grilled or smoked salmon, lake perch and pot roast. Dinners come with a choice of soup or Michigan dried cherry salad, potato or wild rice and vegetables. Other specialties include duck roasted with cranberry glaze, steak with stewed wild mushrooms and beef with pan gravy. The modestly priced Sunday brunch is a local favorite.
