Mel's Hot Dogs Description:
Mel's Hot Dogs is a North Tampa fixture, owned and operated by Mel and Virginia Lohn. Started by Mel in 1973, and located just east of the main entrance to Busch Gardens, Mel's serves up over 15 versions of Chicago style hot dogs, using only kosher style whole beef dogs from the Vienna Beef Company. All dogs are finished in a special made, hot steamed poppy seed bun.
Other extras include french fries made from Idaho potatoes deep fried in 100% canola oil, "Mom's Recipe" homemade cole slaw and oven baked beans.
With one bite of a Mel's Chicago-style dog made with a Kosher hot dog and topped with barrel-cured sauerkraut, dill pickles, sweet Spanish onions and sweet pickle relish on a poppy seed bun, you can count on having sauce dribble down your chin and onto your shirt. Owner Mel Lohn has been selling hot dogs for many years, an idea he had when he headed out for a hot dog and couldn't find a stand in town. Mel's also is proud to say his wieners are "light dogs"---sporting 70 percent less fat. There are some alternatives for those not hot for dogs, such as veggie burgers and handmade smoked sausage dogs, but your best bet is to stick with the house specialty.
