Frederick's Bistro Restaurant Description:
Frederick Costa has helped form San Antonio's fine-dining scene over the years, yet his eponymous, Asian-French restaurant in upper Alamo Heights has long seemed in need of an infusion. But with the birth of the Bistro he's both exploring a new audience (Audis as opposed to Caddys) and reinvigorating his cuisine. Even appetizers such as the homemade country pâté that are common to both establishments seem to take on a more lively tone in this paneled and dramatically lighted setting. (We would appreciate a pot of grainy mustard, however.) Though spring rolls appear at the Bistro, along with the first-rate calamari over spicy Chinese noodles, there's also less emphasis on Frederick's French-Asian fusion. Instead, dishes such as a shredded duck and shiitake pizza and grilled lamb chops Dijonnaise take the spotlight, along with grilled Prime rib-eye with Café de Paris butter. A daily happy hour also emphasizes the different demographic.
