Avalon Drug Co. & Diner Description:
This suburban outpost of the River Oaks original doesn't have quite the authentic '40s and '50s drugstore ambience down pat, but the food is every bit as nostalgic. Avalon boasts authentic Southern breakfast and lunch fare. Omelets and bacon and sausage are standard, but our favorite dish is the buttermilk biscuits smothered in sausage gravy. For lunch, try one of the old-fashioned burgers that put Avalon on the map: with a buttered bun and melted American cheese, they're impossible to resist and need no flourishes. Still, you can gussy them up with mushrooms, Swiss, jalapeños or chili. A true Texas favorite is the chili Frito pie, but even waist-watchers will find solace in the Big Salad, which truly is.
