Kyodai Description:
Casual sushi restaurant with rotating sushi bar. Dishes are placed on the conveyor belt by sushi chefs working in the central kitchen area of the bar. Also features several tables for sit-down eating. Dishes range from less than $3 to about $6 for sushi plates.
The Slow Food movement notwithstanding, fine food and instant gratification are not mutually exclusive. Exhibit A: sushi. Exhibit A-plus: Kyodai Rotating Sushi Bar, one of many Japanese restaurants in Towson, but by far the most fun. Kyodai is novel in several ways---including its dark, brick-lined, Asian-steakhouse décor---but the real innovation, a first for the Baltimore area, is the curving oval sushi bar, topped by a moving conveyor belt. Nimble-fingered chefs create an assortment of jewel-like sushi, arrange them on small plates, top with a clear lid, and set them on the conveyor, ready to be snapped up by eager sushi-mavens. Each plate is color-coded according to the cost of the offering. What will it be: a quartet of maki, each topped with fish roe of a different color? Crunchy spiced tuna rolls draped with slices of raw fish and avocado? A cool seaweed salad sprinkled with sesame seeds? Friendly, attentive servers stand ready to answer questions, take special orders (yes, there's a full menu of non-sushi items), and count the plates.
