SBC Cafe Description:
As tiny as a vest pocket and filled to overflowing as pockets usually are, the SBC (an offshoot of the Bethesda-based Thai eatery named Sweet Basil) offers a startlingly diverse menu that pulls from various cultures and cooking traditions. On a specials menu, you might find a cilantro-braised lamb shank with canary beans or short ribs braised in dried cherries, chiles, and chocolate, all of which compete with the regular menu offerings: curry-crusted rockfish, a catfish po'boy or a Thai flank steak salad. We skipped appetizers, zeroing in on the Serano-wrapped chicken, which turns out to be a plump breast wrapped in Serano ham and served with smoked gouda, a combination that really works. Our friend selected the turkey and Brie focaccia, declaring it a satisfactory sandwich, but doubts linger. We should have opted for the short ribs instead. For sweet conclusions, save room for the white chocolate and Heath Bar bread pudding. As for décor, there's not much that catches the eye. The main pull here is the food, and since the space is so cramped, perhaps you can strike up a conversation with your neighbor.
