Eat: An American Bistro Description:
An ecclectic yet home-style take on American food. Think gourmet meets Momma's cooking. In addition to their regular menu, Erick has many nightly specials. So if you don't see what you want on the site, he's probably got it on the chalkboard.
Eat is exactly what you'll want to do at this funky little beachside bistro. The attitude is playful but the food is serious, befitting an upscale restaurant where the boardwalk ends. Chef-owner Erick Heilig piles on rock shrimp, scallops, seasonal crab and clams for a memorable cioppino brimming with a saffron-infused fennel broth. Bring your camera for the veggie lasagna, colorfully engineered grilled zucchini, toasted pine nut ricotta, charred yellow tomatoes, pistachio pesto, and sun-dried tomato sauce. And don't miss the pan-seared veal meatloaf. Heilig describes it as mom's meatloaf in overdrive; considering his mom is Marilyn Heilig, former executive chef at downtown Norfolk's 219, that's saying something. Talent is in the family DNA. Sister Holly Evans designed the cool graphics. Even at the peak of tourist season, Heilig doesn't dumb down his menu for the sunburnt crowd but adds whimsical twists like sliders, a mini Hereford beef burger, and an oyster po' boy. Given his creative flair and the resultant eye-catching, flavor-packed platters, prices here are quite reasonable.
