Prima Description:
Since its beginnings in 1977 as a wine-and-cheese shop that served informal meals, Prima has been an East Bay favorite. It still has a wine shop at the back of one dining room, from which diners can choose a wine right off the shelf for a modest corkage fee; there are weekly wine tastings, and all wines served by the glass are available for tastes. Executive chef Peter Chastain brought the restaurant even higher when he arrived a few years ago. Look for dishes such as agnolotti filled with braised oxtails served in a Parmesan broth or the oddly named strangle the priest pasta served with a hearty meat sauce. On the main menu are local halibut, grilled ahi and braised baby chicken. Save room for the excellent desserts like pistachio mille-feuille, puff pastry layered with toasted pistachio cream. A jazz pianist plays Wednesday through Saturday evenings.
