Big Sky Café Description:
Close to the Loretto-Hilton Center, home to Opera Theatre of St. Louis and The Repertory Theatre, Big Sky hosts pre-theater crowds in a converted house with a slightly raucous, hand-painted sensibility. The pace slows a bit after the curtain goes up, but the room remains busy nonetheless. Despite the proximity to Webster University, this spot is fine for post-graduate diners who arrive ready to share food, something the restaurant encourages with tapas-style small plates, side dishes in generous portions and a stack of Fiestaware plates on each table. A solid, reasonably priced wine list promotes lingering. The loosely applied theme is home-style American reinterpreted, translating to dishes like creamy potato and leek soup and crab cakes with smoked tomato tartar sauce. Keep an eye out for the macaroni and cheese side dish, dappled with pepper bacon and covered with crumbs of the cornbread that's in each breadbasket. We commend the concept of a cobbler du jour, using whatever is in season, although many customers seem never to get farther than caramel apple pie.
