The ample portions aren't really the reason to come here; rather, it's the innovative Cantonese cooking. In other places, the same repertoire of charsui, chow mein and chop suey makes repeat overtures, but you won't find too much of that at Phoenix Inn. The house special is the cold appetizer gem of boneless chicken, basically chopped, boiled chicken tossed in a tangy soy-based dressing. Another specialty is steamed stuffed bean curd, which are cubes of tofu stuffed with ground pork, all cooked in a fragrant black bean sauce. Tofu isn't the same bland stuff you've grown to expect. The beef stew in bean sauce is an adaptation of a classic recipe, using beef brisket and diced daikon for a light, refreshing contrast. Phoenix Inn also has a healthy-choice menu featuring a wide range of stir-fried vegetarian and seafood dishes that use less salt and oil. The dessert shop next door sells tarts, custards and jellos, all with a Chinese twist. That means flavors like jujubes, lotus seeds and sesame are typical. Don't be afraid to try the red-bean congee and coconut milk with tapioca---they are surprisingly quite refreshing.
