Hakuba Description:
Kentland's answer to Japanese food rests mainly within this corner restaurant with its slightly exotic décor and its overtly Westernized menu. Putting aside such dishes as Pat's Roll with spicy tuna, 007 Roll with shrimp on a California roll, Viagra Roll with spicy tuna, salmon and eel, and Ninja sashimi (one thinks of warrior turtles), you will find standard fare, including the bento boxes, tempura and teriyaki dishes, and other sushi, yakimono and katsu offerings. Surprisingly good are the full-flavored miso soup and the chawan mushi, a steamed egg custard hiding a gingko nut nestled in the center. If you drop by at lunchtime, consider one of the kitchen's bento box choices: these are moderately priced and substantial enough to ward off mid-afternoon hunger pangs. Up first: the chicken teriyaki with shrimp, tempura vegetables and a California roll. The exotic-flavored ice cream desserts are not worth the calories.
