Cafe Momo Description:
We're not sure what possessed restaurateur Michel Ohayon to take one large space and divide it down the middle into two small, distinctly different restaurants, but the half named Café Momo has swept a Provençal breeze through smog-coated Westwood Village. Ohayon himself welcomes guests at the door, brightly clad in Middle Eastern robes (the restaurant shares an entrance and kitchen with Koutoubia, Ohayon's Moroccan restaurant.) Quirky as it might be, Momo has a handle on the essential flavors of Provençal cooking and offers them at a fair price. The more complex dishes tend to suffer slightly from over-seasoning, the one exception being the briks, crunchy goat cheese stuffed turnovers enhanced by a pinch of cumin---the Moroccan influence in evidence---and served with a lightly dressed green salad. Other standouts tend to be the simple dishes, like the steamed mussels served with crisp frites, the seafood pasta and the platter of Michel Blanchet's smoked salmon. With a location directly across the street from Wally's, one of Los Angeles' finest wine emporiums, it should be no surprise that Momo's small but thoughtful wine list includes a remarkable selection of Provençal rosés.
