If it's true, as some locals will claim without hesitation, that New Orleans should actually be counted as the northernmost point of the Caribbean rather than a part of the American South, then the scarcity of jerk chicken and other such classic island delights is downright mystifying. Still, take a turn down Bayou Road in Mid-City and Coco Hut reveals itself to be a rare local oasis of Jamaican cooking. Customers give their orders directly to the cook over the service counter and meals are presented in Styrofoam boxes. But this tiny kitchen turns out topnotch jerk chicken that's both aromatic and spicy, a jerk shrimp with a crisp, charred surface and a variety of daily fish options. Everything is made from scratch and the friendly vibe, the reggae on the radio and the smell of spice in the air fashion a hospitable environment.
