Acme Oyster & Seafood House Description:
As the name says, oysters. Raw on the half shell is the specialty but they will batter and fry them and put them in a sandwich for you too. The local favorites like gumbo, crayfish, jambalaya and beans and rice are found here too. The decor is functional and worn and worthy of nearly a century of serving up food and drink. Being tucked in on a street that nearly feels like an alley helps keep the balance of the patrons from becoming totally tourists. Although they are welcome too.
For many locals this French Quarter landmark remains the gold standard for raw oysters. The oysters are of top quality, the atmosphere is somewhere between a saloon and a family restaurant, and the place is located right on the doorstep of the French Quarter. All of this makes it difficult to get in, especially when large conventions are in town, and it is common to see people lined up outside on the sidewalk waiting for a table or a coveted spot at the small, marble-topped oyster bar. The menu offers a solid rundown of casual New Orleans classics with an emphasis on fried seafood and po' boys. Gumbo or red beans served in a bread bowl, known here as the Poopa, is a house specialty. Acme also offers what the menu dubs "Cajun sushi," with raw or fried oysters or fried shrimp topped with wasabi, Tabasco soy sauce, sticky rice and chopsticks. Insider's tip: If you show up in April, you can partake of the annual oyster eating contest. The current world's record? Twenty-nine dozen in eight minutes. Consider that a challenge.
