Few city restaurants can boast such a bucolic setting as the Audubon Golf Clubhouse, located smack in the center of an oak grove and across from Audubon Zoo. Open to the public, the restaurant offers diners serene views of white egrets, lush oak trees, lagoons, and the open, undulating Audubon Park golf course through plenty of windowed double doors or from a table on the wraparound porch. The menu here has straightforward clubhouse fare that is reliably well prepared. Nachos, club sandwiches, burgers and Caribbean-themed salads are mainstays and the tangles of thin, spice-battered onion rings are first-rate. The golf-shirted waiters practically expect tables to linger and seem perfectly willing to refill your iced tea glass all afternoon. After you eat, try to score one of the rocking chairs on the porch---a relaxing setting for coffee.
