Fried, golden brown oysters bathed in melted Brie anyone? Yes, please. The classic luxury of this dish seems perfect in this somewhat austere atmosphere that is Clancy's. A whitewashed main dining room of mirrors, bentwood chairs and tuxedoed waiters may seem stuffy, but the place fills with Uptown swells who treat it like their own private club. Table-hopping is common among the smartly dressed crowd, and the tiny bar up front has a surprisingly robust cocktail culture all its own. The kitchen produces updated Creole dishes, such as a light, crisply sautéed trout with pecans, grilled chicken breast enlivened with pistachio-lime butter and a topnotch filet mignon in Madeira sauce. The lightly smoked soft-shell crab with a sprinkling of crab meat is an indispensable entrée here. Proprietor Brad Hollingsworth's personally chosen wine list is a commendable blend of expertly chosen selections at more than reasonable prices. The fine dessert pies include a towering wedge of peppermint ice cream under a frothy meringue and a lemon icebox pie that many home cooks would be proud to call their own.
