Mandina's Description:
Mandina's has been part of the neighborhood since the 1930s, and the food standards seem to have risen in the last few years. Margarine, tomato sauce and frying oil are still the staples here, along with enough seasonings to put a blush on your cheek. The turtle soup au sherry is definitive, and the bread pudding is sweet enough to make your teeth hurt. Broiled trout is a top seller and especially winning is trout amandine meunière. Spaghetti with meatballs and Italian-sausage po' boy sandwiches point to the Mandina family's Italian roots; precede either with an Italian olive salad garnished with hard-cooked egg. Whether it's all worth the frequent wait of a half-hour or more may depend upon your nostalgia quotient. The prices are still manageable for everybody. Some post-Katrina renovations rearranged the interior a little without losing the old place's charm. The building is still pink, for instance, and neon still trims the awning.
