Tujague's Description:
Established in 1856, Tujague's is among New Orleans oldest restaurants. Located across from the French Market, the creole menu is pre-set with an appetizer, soup, salad, a choice of one from three entrees, dessert, coffee or tea, wine, cocktail, or beer -including Tujague's own microbrewed Beer.
If walls could talk, these walls would tell tales of housing a Spanish armory centuries ago, and later serving as a Mississippi riverfront eatery for dock workers and laborers. Today, Decatur Street is brimming with tourist attractions, the oldest of which is this restaurant. Tujague's adheres to a traditional style of restaurant dining, with a prix-fixe progression of dishes and a limited choice of entrées, such as the house specialty, a lackluster strip of boiled beef brisket accompanied by a sauce that is equal parts ketchup and horseradish, although it's a dish that harks back to the restaurant's earliest days in the 1850s. Garlicky sautéed chicken bonne femme is decently done. If the food's quality could be brought up a few notches, this would be a fine example of bourgeois Creole cooking from the turn of the century. The restaurant's ornate bar, imported from Paris by its founder and namesake, Guillaume Tujague, still dominates the saloon. Tujague's is known for mixing some of the best classic cocktails in the city, making it a good place to have a quick meal in the French Quarter. Domestic, French, Italian and Australian wines compose a 60-label list.
