Upperline Description:
Upperline's seven-course Taste of New Orleans menu reveals the spirited cooking of chef Ken Smith, who performs like a Louisiana patriot. Iconic dishes include shrimp rémoulade on a thick slice of fried green tomato, invented here but now found all over the city; roasted duck sauced with garlic and port or with ginger and peaches; and crawfish enchiladas in an intensely seasoned cream sauce. The wine list, while not deep, is notable for its care of selection, and the wine service, with Riedel stemware and temperature- and humidity-controlled storage, hits the high marks. Patrons will find a good choice of half bottles, wines by the glass and pricing that runs from wicked cheap to high-end. A variety of personalities are found among the seasoned waiters, and the upbeat owner-host herself is reason enough to spend an evening here. With dining room walls densely hung with an ever-evolving regional art collection, the restaurant could easily be mistaken for a gallery spotlighting Southern artists. Upperline should be on the agenda for anyone visiting the city.
