Big'z Burger Joint Description:
Local chef Andrew Weissman (of Il Sogno and Sandbar fame) is the creative force behind this family-run and family-friendly burger barn where yellow walls compete with the terra-cotta-stained floors, and corrugated metal plays against picnic tables topped with butcher paper. Less industrially chic are the Angus beef burgers in several formats, to which beer-braised onions, apple wood smoked bacon, portobello mushrooms, slaw or assorted cheeses can be added. There's a chalupa burger, too, which tops a chalupa shell with refrieds, cheddar, pico de gallo and a half-pound of Angus. We like the burgers well enough, and there's a grilled chicken sandwich with pepper jack cheese, but it's the seasoned fries with inventive dips such as chipotle ketchup and tandoori mayo that have us hooked. The milkshakes (Mexican vanilla is a favorite) are challenging only in their density, so a little melt-down time is advised.
